Weighing 35 tons, the machine in the US can create 100 tesla magnetic fields in extremely short times, serving material research, quantum technology and biomedicine.
At the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory (MagLab), located at the National Laboratory in Los Alamos, New Mexico, USA, scientists are operating one of the most powerful pulse magnets ever built. The device is capable of creating a 100 tesla magnetic field - about 2 million times stronger than the Earth's magnetic field, which is only about 50 microtesla.
This achievement was established in 2012, after many efforts to create an extremely strong magnetic field without causing the magnet to explode. Previously, some devices could create magnetic fields exceeding 1,000 tesla, but were often destroyed almost instantly. Magnetic field pulses only last about 0.0075 milliseconds, too short to collect the necessary scientific data.
The special feature of the device in Los Alamos is the ability to maintain a peak magnetic field of 100 tesla in about 15 milliseconds. The magnet increases intensity from 40 to 100 tesla in just 8 milliseconds, enough time for researchers to record the reaction of the material in an extremely strong magnetic environment. The device can also perform multiple experiments, helping to check and compare results.
The machine weighs about 35 tons, consisting of magnetic coils nested together, with a total coil weight of about 9 tons. The system uses a high-capacity power source and a 2-megaajoule condenser to release energy in a short time. The coils are cooled with liquid nitrogen to limit the heat generated during operation.
So what is that power used for? At Los Alamos, scientists use extremely strong magnetic fields to study superconduction phenomena, learn how materials react in special conditions, and survey the behavior of particles at the quantum level.
These studies can contribute to the development of new materials, quantum technology and medical equipment. Research groups also apply equipment to analyze the chemical composition of meteorites, organic matter and specimens originating from the natural environment.
