Magnet Grade Cross-Reference: NdFeB, SmCo & Ferrite

Each row is an AIC grade; the columns give the nearest published grade from each source — NdFeB: MMPA, VACODYM, Shin-Etsu, NEOMAX, NEOREC, Arnold; SmCo: MMPA, VACOMAX, Shin-Etsu, Hitachi, RECOMA; ferrite: MMPA, C-classes, TDK FB. Holding a foreign grade? Find it in its maker's column (it may match more than one AIC row) — or send it to us and we will match it.

Each cell is the source grade nearest to the AIC grade by published remanence (Br) and intrinsic coercivity (HcJ), computed with one rule — not an officially stated equivalence. A candidate qualifies when its Br is within 5 % of the AIC grade (0.1 point rounding slack) and its HcJ is 90–135 % of the AIC guarantee (for ferrite, of the published range; inside the range counts as equal). Of those, the one with the smallest combined distance (ΔBr ÷ 2.5 %)² + (ΔHcJ ÷ 15 %)² is shown. Br compares the AIC range centre with the source's range centre (Shin-Etsu, NEOMAX, NEOREC, RECOMA ranges) or, for VAC, MMPA, Arnold NdFeB, C-classes and TDK FB, their typical/nominal value; makers' guaranteed minimums are on their datasheets. Each cell shows the Br and HcJ differences (+ means the source grade is higher than AIC's) and the source's published HcJ in kA/m — minimum values, except MMPA and C-classes (typical) and TDK FB (nominal), whose differences compare a typical value with AIC's guarantee and are indicative only. * marks a loose match: Br differs by more than 2.5 %, or HcJ is more than 5 % lower or more than 15 % higher. A lower HcJ can mean a lower temperature class (e.g. AH → EH) — check the candidate's rated temperature; a higher HcJ usually means a higher class and higher cost. “—” means no listed grade from that source qualifies — not that the maker has no such grade. Always compare full datasheets, and ask us to confirm before substituting.

  • MMPA designations read BHmax (MGOe) / HcJ (kOe); the 2000-edition standard stops at 50/11.
  • Arnold rates N52 at 60 °C and AH at 220 °C; AIC's datasheet gives 80 °C and 230 °C.
  • Most SmCo cells are “—” because AIC SMG grades guarantee HcJ ≥ 1990 kA/m, while same-Br grades such as VACOMAX 225 AP/TP, RECOMA 24HE/28HE, Shin-Etsu R28HS/R32HS and Hitachi H-26SV guarantee 1500–1750 kA/m. For ~300 °C duty they can still substitute — ask us to confirm.
  • NEOMAX, NEOREC and Hitachi SmCo values come from archived Hitachi Metals (now Proterial) and TDK catalogues; current lines may differ. C5 and C8 are the usual names for MMPA Ceramic 5 and 8; C8A, C8B, C9 and C10 are distributor names. Grade not listed? Send it to us and we will match it.
