Advanced Electric Machines (AEM) has released technical specifications of its new Titan heavy-duty motor at IAA Transportation. The drive system does away with permanent magnets and rare earth materials to achieve up to 700 kW and 5,000 Nm.

The first prototypes for the AEM Titan, which weighs around 200 kilograms, were announced for the third quarter of 2027.

Titan is the largest and highest-torque model to date in AEM’s HDRM motor family. In continuous operation, the British company specifies an output of 500 kW and a torque of 3,500 Nm. The maximum speed is 4,000 rpm, and the dry weight is approximately 200 kg.

AEM first announced the new motor at the end of August but did not disclose any performance data at the time. At the trade fair in Hanover, the company is presenting Titan initially in the form of a detailed 3D model. According to current information, the first samples are expected to become available in Q3 of 2027.

Like the other drives in the HDRM family, Titan does without permanent magnets and thus without rare earth elements. AEM also aims to eliminate copper in its motors, instead using readily available and recyclable materials such as steel and aluminium. However, the company has not disclosed the exact motor principle behind the HDRM technology.

AEM targets 500 kW continuous power

To achieve such high power and torque density, AEM cites technologies such as compressed coils and a revised thermal management system. The extruded housing allows for different lengths, and various output shafts can be used. This is meant to enable the motor to adapt to a wide range of heavy-duty applications.

Since Titan does not use permanent magnets, AEM states there is no risk of demagnetisation at high temperatures and speeds. A freewheeling function also allows coasting without drive torque. Even at high speeds, there should be no cogging torque. However, AEM has not specified a concrete efficiency figure for the new motor.

Titan is designed to be compatible with various inverters. In the event of a fault, AEM states that neither back-EMF nor short-circuit currents occur.

AEM was spun out of Newcastle University in 2017 and specialises in electric motors without permanent magnets or rare earth elements. Most recently, the company reported two development contracts from the passenger car industry. In the commercial vehicle sector, a major customer, the insolvent e-truck manufacturer Tevva, had previously been lost.

In 2024, AEM generated revenue of £2.9 million but recorded a loss of £8.3 million. Most recently, the company announced an investment of £16 million to accelerate the development of its next generation of electric drivetrain technologies.
