American rare earth magnet manufacturer Vulcan Elements has entered a partnership with research organisation North Carolina Collaboratory to advance the development of high-performance rare earth magnets for defence and commercial technology uses, according to Mining Weekly . The collaboration centres on research led by Yosuke Kanai, a chemistry professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, aimed at building a new analytic capability. The work will use quantum-mechanical simulations to predict with considerable accuracy how changes at the atomic level influence magnetic properties, which Vulcan expects to set a new standard for its magnetic performance. Vulcan describes the partnership as bringing together two research fields it considers foundational to national security and the future economy: rare earth magnets and quantum mechanics.
North Carolina Collaboratory is providing USD 600 000 to support the application of the university's scientific expertise to rare earth magnet innovation. The organisation works with academic experts across the state to turn research into practical applications for North Carolina's benefit, and since its founding in 2016 it has backed more than 800 research projects and managed over USD 300-million in state appropriations. Vulcan CEO John Maslin characterised the research partnership as a model for public-private cooperation that the nation needs, saying it generates breakthrough technologies and translates them into manufacturing capabilities that serve the economy and national security. Vulcan's Benson manufacturing facility is under construction in North Carolina. It is positioned as a cornerstone of the domestic rare earth magnet supply chain and as the largest rare earth magnet factory outside China, with 1.1-million square feet of space and a planned yearly capacity of 10 000 t of sintered neodymium magnets.
